Fishing in Ocean City

Ocean City calls itself the White Marlin Capital of the World for a reason — the offshore canyons (Baltimore, Washington, Poor Man's) draw the fleet that fuels the White Marlin Open every August. But you don't need a boat, a mate, or a six-figure entry fee to fish here. OC splits cleanly into three ways to wet a line: by boat, from the ocean side, and from the bayside — and the town keeps a couple of quiet license-free corners for exactly this kind of casual fishing.

By Boat — Charters & Headboats

The offshore fleet works out of West OC's harbor and the Dorchester St docks downtown — half-day headboats for sea bass and flounder, full charters running out to the canyons for marlin and tuna. Rental boats put you in charge if you'd rather run your own trip inshore.

Surf fishing off the open beach is seasonal and rule-bound (ask a lifeguard about the current window); the Inlet jetty is the local go-to for stripers, blues, and tautog without a rod license headache since it sits at the edge of town water. The two commercial piers carry their own blanket license, so anyone fishing from the pier itself is covered.

The calmer bayside options are where most families actually end up: the 9th St pier, the 2nd–4th St bulkhead (one of the two license-free zones), and Homer Gudelsky Park — "the point" — in West OC, which doubles as the town's best casual clamming and crabbing spot. The Rt. 50 bridge fishing area and the day-trip bayside parks (Isle of Wight Park, the Gum Point Rd ramp) round out the bayside options for visitors staying inland.

Do I need a fishing license in Ocean City?

Usually yes — a Maryland Chesapeake Bay & Coastal Sport license covers all OC waters. But NOT at the two commercial piers (OC Fishing Pier, Oceanic Pier — their blanket licenses cover you) or the two license-free zones (2nd–4th St bulkhead, Northside Park), where free MD angler registration is required instead.

Crabbing With Kids

How do we go crabbing with kids?

The rite of passage: chicken necks on a string off a bayside dock or pier — 9th St pier, Northside Park's lagoon, or Homer Gudelsky Park in West OC. Lower the neck, wait for a tug, lift slowly, net the crab. Keepers must be 5 inches point-to-point; toss the females with eggs.
