Shopping

Boardwalk institutions, island malls, and the outlet run over the Rt. 50 bridge — plus the tax angle, honestly explained.

OC shopping has three distinct personalities. Browsing the boards is its own activity — kite shops, surf shops, and the gloriously weird one-offs sit shoulder to shoulder with interchangeable tee emporiums. The island's shopping centers answer the practical "I need a bathing suit / hoodie / beach chair NOW" question. And the outlets over the Rt. 50 bridge in West OC are the rainy-day retail plan.

The Tax Angle

Is shopping tax-free near Ocean City?

Maryland charges 6% sales tax (including clothing). But tax-free Delaware starts at 146th St — Fenwick and the Rt 54 corridor are minutes away. Bonus: Maryland's tax-free week (clothing/shoes under $100/item) lands in mid-August, right in peak season.
