Bikes & Breakfast

The classic OC morning: rent a bike, ride the boards before the cutoff, then eat like you earned it.

There's a whole genre of OC morning that goes: wake up early, rent a bike, ride the Boardwalk while it still belongs to joggers and fishermen, then land at a pancake house before the crowds do. It only works if you know the cutoff — the Boardwalk bike-hours rule got extended in 2026, from noon to 2:00 PM, after the tram that used to enforce the rhythm was retired.

Bike Rental Shops

(5)

All five shops sit on or just off the boards; most rent cruisers, tandems, and the classic banana bikes, and a couple open as early as 6:30am for exactly this reason.

The 2pm Rule

When can you bike on the Boardwalk?

In summer 2026 (Memorial Day weekend–Labor Day): midnight until 2:00 PM daily — the cutoff was extended from noon after the tram retired. Off-season: anytime, except Springfest and Sunfest weekends.

Applies to bikes, certain e-bikes, skateboards, and skates. Surreys and rentals follow the same clock. Official rules govern.

Breakfast

(13)

OC's breakfast institutions split into two camps: the pancake-house lifers (Layton's since 1959, Happy Jack since 1960, The General's Kitchen's creamed chipped beef) and the newer brunch spots (Barn 34's Cap'n Crunch French toast, the pink bayfront Bayside Skillet). Filter for "open at 7am" if you're actually keeping the morning schedule.
