William T. Birch

Surfman of the Green Run Life-Saving Station crew, living at Watermelon Point on the Worcester mainland. On Sunday 13 January 1895 he set out across Sinepuxent Bay in a small boat with Charles Gray Hudson and Charles Baker to reach the station and report for duty, in a south-west gale; all three drowned within sight of the shore. His absence was discovered when Captain Soper of Green Run sent a messenger to ask why he had not reported. Hudson's body was recovered on 19 March and buried at Green Run; Birch's and Baker's at the end of March. He was a member of the Odd Fellows' lodge at Newark, Maryland, and left a widow who was still prostrated with grief in April. Edward Benchboard of Girdletree was appointed to his place at the station within a fortnight.
