William Robbins McCabe
merchant, banker, Speaker of the Delaware House of Representatives · active 1876–1920
Born at Selbyville, Delaware on 25 June 1859, son of William S. and Martha Davis McCabe; a Selbyville merchant from 1876 to 1900; elected to the Delaware legislature in 1883, the first Democrat returned from Baltimore hundred in thirty years, and Speaker of the House in his second term; State Insurance and Banking Commissioner for four years and a member of Governor Biggs's staff; founder and first president of the Selbyville Bank in 1903. He married Beulah Whaley of Whaleyville, Md., in 1888 and retired from business about 1920 on account of his health. He died suddenly of paralysis on the evening of Sunday 30 November 1930, aged 71, and was buried in the Red Men's Cemetery at Selbyville. His five children included William W. McCabe, mayor of Ocean City, and Thomas B. McCabe, president of the Scott Paper Company.
