Owner of the sailboat capsized in Sinepuxent Bay in a violent wind and thunderstorm on the afternoon of 11 August 1901 while returning with his son John from a pleasure trip to the Fenwick's Island camp. Father and son clung to the upturned boat until the Ocean City life-saving crew took them off. The United States Life-Saving Service's own annual report logs the same casualty as the sharpie C. H. Ball, capsized near the station during a heavy north-west squall, two occupants rescued by surfmen in two small boats - which makes Quillin and his son the two men in the campaign's only named 1901 Ocean City rescue.
