William D. Pitts

The surveyor Ocean City called down from Berlin on 13 March 1946 to check its own surveyor's work. He went over George B. Cropper's field notes and calculations, found them mathematically correct, went into the field with him, and reported that the town's iron pipe monuments at the corners of Baltimore Avenue and North First Street stood 2.26 feet - and by a second check measurement 2.17 feet - too far south of the true corners shown on the Sinepuxent Beach Company plat. He signed himself 'William D. Pitts, Registered Surveyor #165'. He sat with Cropper, Robert C. Walker and the city attorney on 25 March and 2 April as the town worked out what to do, and the lawyers sent 'Bill Pitts' a copy of the rewritten ordinance in May.
