W. Ennis Hedian

A temporary employee of the United States Census Bureau, living with his mother at 2014 R Street N.W., Washington. On 19 August 1931, from the porch of the family's Ocean City cottage and against the opinion of everyone else on it, he heard a man calling, ran into the surf in his clothes and swam some two hundred feet through breakers to a jetty, where Simeon N. Mallory, 52, was clinging semi-conscious; he brought Mallory back to shore, and physicians and life guards worked over him for half an hour before he regained consciousness. Warning flags had been posted against the heavy surf that day. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission awarded him a bronze medal at its autumn meeting, announced on 29 October 1932, when he was away at his cottage at Epping Forest near Annapolis and was the last to hear of it.
