Elected to the Ocean City City Council on W. Lee Carey's ticket at the municipal election of 3 August 1908, for a two-year term. In November his little daughter was reported ill with typhoid fever at Ocean City. — 1897 FULL PASS, 2026-08-11: CAUTION, not a merge. The Official Register for 1 July 1897 lists a 'Samuel J. Massey' as an Ocean City surfman at $65.00 a month — the only man in the station block paid above the $60 standard, which in Life-Saving Service practice marks the No. 1 surfman or boat-steerer (the register prints no rank column, so this is an inference from the pay differential, not a printed fact). This person record is presently the Samuel J. Massey elected to the city council in 1908. They may be the same man eleven years on, or father and son. Recorded here because the 1897 surfman is a real, dated, federally documented person who does not yet have a record of his own.
