Omar D. Conger
United States Senator from Michigan · 1818–1898
Born at Cooperstown, New York, in 1818 and raised in Huron County, Ohio; graduated from Western Reserve College in 1842 and worked on the survey of the Lake Superior iron and copper region before reading law. He represented Michigan in the United States House of Representatives and then in the Senate, and lived in Washington after leaving public life. Taken ill in the summer of 1898, he went first to Atlantic City and then to Ocean City, Maryland, where he died on the afternoon of 11 July 1898.

Omar D. Conger, former United States Senator from Michigan, dies at Ocean City.
The Washington Evening Star of 12 July 1898: 'A telegram was received yesterday by Mr. Frank B. Conger announcing the death of his father, ex-Senator Omar D. Conger of Michigan, which occurred yesterday afternoon at Ocean City, Md. The ex-senator, who had lived in this city since his retirement from public life, was taken ill about two weeks ago, but his symptoms were not alarming. He went to Atlantic City, and from that place to Ocean City, where the end came yesterday afternoon.' Conger was born at Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1818, graduated from Western Reserve College in 1842, worked on the survey of the Lake Superior iron and copper region, and served in both houses of Congress — ten years in the House and a term in the Senate — before retiring to Washington. He left three children.
Ocean City had been a place senators summered since Blackburn took a cottage in 1892. In 1898 it became a place one of them went to die, having tried Atlantic City first.
