Washington man awarded a Carnegie hero medal, reported in May 1907, for bravery at Ocean City the previous summer in attempting to save a drowning comrade. The Washington Herald's society column is the only source; neither the comrade nor the outcome of the attempt is named.

A Carnegie hero medal for a drowning rescue at Ocean City - and two Baltimore County boys pull a Washington woman out of the surf.
The Washington Herald of 26 May 1907 reported that "Mr. Malcolm Auerbach, who distinguished himself so bravely at Ocean City last summer in attempting to save a drowning comrade, has been awarded a Carnegie hero medal." In August the Baltimore County Union carried the year's own rescue: "Through the heroism of Harry G. Skinner, Jr., aged 18, and his brother, Howard Skinner, aged 16, a Washington woman was saved from drowning at Ocean City, Md., a few days ago. These brave boys, who are expert swimmers, are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Skinner, of Mt. Washington, Baltimore county." Twenty-three years before the Beach Patrol, the beach was policed by whoever could swim.
