Ocean City got its ambulance in 1942 as a private gift, and the council's only recorded act was to write and say thank you.
At the meeting of 17 June 1942 'the question of letter to Mr. Lloyd Watson thanking him for his gift to the city of ambulance was discussed and secretary was instructed to write the letter expressing the thanks of the council for same'. The minute does not say when the ambulance arrived, what it was, or who was to drive it — only that it had been Watson's and that the town now had it. In a summer when the nearest hospital was in Salisbury, thirty miles inland, and the beach was under Coast Guard patrol, an ambulance was not a small thing to be given. The same meeting struck the 1942 tax rate at $1.20 per hundred and ordered the election notices published in both county papers for the last two weeks of July.
