"The moving and directing spirit" of the oyster-planting combination at Onley's Landing on the Sinepuxent, about fifteen miles below Snow Hill, which the Washington Times in July 1901 called "the most important oyster planting interest in the country". He was "backed by members of his own family and a number of progressive neighbors", working under Maryland's planting laws in a bay twelve to fifteen miles across and rarely more than eight feet deep. It was his industry, not navigation, that the paper said an inlet cut below Ocean City was meant to serve.
