Keeper of the Ocean City, Md., Coast Guard station until May 1925, when he was transferred to the Sixth District office at Lewes, Delaware, in the Federal Building, and moved his family into the Frank A. Coverdale property on Beebe Avenue. He is the first Ocean City keeper the campaign has after Capt. William I. Purnell, who held the post in 1917 and was still described as keeper in 1922-23. When his appointment began is not established. The Hudsons are a long-standing Worcester County surfing family: Capt. John Andrew Jackson Hudson kept the station c. 1880-1909, Walter E. Hudson appears in 1909-10, and Capt. William I. Hudson kept the Isle of Wight station in 1923.

Milford Chronicle, 22 May 1925, in its "Lewes News" column: "Captain John W. Hudson of Ocean City, Md., has been transferred from keeper of the Coast Guard Station there, to the office of the Coast Guard Station at Lewes, in the Federal Building and has moved his family here into the Frank A. Coverdale property on Beebe avenue." Six weeks earlier, on 1 April 1925, Chief Boatswain's Mate Thomas T. Moore had left the same station for Fenwick Island.
Ocean City's station lost both its keeper and its most decorated surfman inside eight weeks of spring 1925, and then had to watch the town burn from the beach in December.
