Son of the Massey who kept a hotel at Ocean City in 1887. He married Sadie Hudson, niece of D. J. Whealton, at Accomac Court House, Virginia, on November 1, 1887, and after several weeks in the northern cities the couple settled on the Virginia Eastern Shore rather than at the beach.
