Miss Irma Mumford

Named registration chairman for Ocean City of the Woman's Division of National Defense for Worcester County in December 1941, one of four women given the county's defence registration between them — with Mrs. William E. Craigmile of Pocomoke City, Miss Lolita Smith of Snow Hill and Miss Elizabeth Henry of Berlin — under General Chairman Mrs. Roger W. Lankford. An 'Irma K. Mumford' also appears on the Ocean City town clerk's list of twenty property owners posted notice of a building hearing in March 1941.

    A woman of Ocean City was made the town's registrar for the Women's Division of National Defense — and the county's appeal for volunteers said, in print, 'regardless of their politics, creed, race or personal position.'

    'Due to the fact that the present declaration of war has made defense objectives of great importance', Mrs. John L. Whitehurst, director of the Women's Council of Defense, was urging every Maryland county to complete its organisation. Mrs. Roger W. Lankford, General Chairman of the Woman's Division of National Defense for Worcester County, named her chairmen in the Worcester Democrat of 12 December 1941, four of them for registration alone: 'Miss Irma Mumford, Ocean City; Mrs. William E. Craigmile, Pocomoke City; Miss Lolita Smith, Snow Hill; Miss Elizabeth Henry, Berlin' — and, for the county, chairmen of Americanization, Housing, Consumer Problems, Nutrition, Nursing, Agriculture, Industry, Recreation, Aviation, U.S. Stamps and Bonds, and Conservation. 'The importance of organizing for defense is understood by everyone. There will be work for every individual in the county and all citizens will be asked to volunteer regardless of their politics, creed, race or personal position.' A week later Mrs. Lankford was complaining that too few women had registered, and pressing that 'every woman over the age of 15 and under the age of 70 is capable of rendering valuable service'. An Irma K. Mumford also stands on the Ocean City clerk's March list of property owners notified of a building hearing, and the clerk's own name was Mumford.
