History

Henry Stokes

hotelier · active 1875

Principal of Henry Stokes & Co., the firm recorded as proprietors of the Atlantic House at Ocean City in its first season, 1875. Railroad excursionists who were entertained there on October 9, 1875 thanked "the very gentlemanly proprietors, Messrs. Henry Stokes & Co." by formal resolution, and Stokes replied on the firm's behalf, crediting the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad's help "in the [enterprise] of making Ocean City a summer resort." The firm did not hold the house for 1876; the lease passed to John Tracy & Co. of Salisbury that November. Nothing further about Stokes has been established.
