Handy Rayne

A Black resident of Berlin, Worcester County, convicted of clubbing Col. Levin L. Dirickson, the county's State's Attorney, near Dirickson's home on the night of September 23, 1887. He was said to hold a grudge against the prosecutor. Having bought a ticket to Salisbury, he was pursued by fifty Berlin men on a chartered special train and taken there; the press reported he confessed, and reported openly that had the crowd found him first he would probably have been lynched. He was sentenced at Snow Hill in late October 1887 to ten years in the penitentiary.
