G. Grier Ratcliff

Salisbury lawyer, drowned at Queponco on Sinepuxent Bay on 31 July 1901 trying to hold up two young women who had seized him in deep water. He had resigned a position at Asbury Park to study law, read under James E. Ellegood at Salisbury, and appeared with Ellegood in the Supreme Court of the United States in the Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic railroad case; he was a Knight Templar of the Salisbury Commandery and "the leading young Republican lawyer in Wicomico county". Four days before he drowned he made the speech nominating Robert P. Graham for judge at the Republican judicial convention held at Ocean City - "that speech was reported in full, and has been favorably commented on all over the Peninsula." He was buried in Odd Fellows' Cemetery, Milford, Delaware.
