Master of the three-masted schooner Sallie W. Kay of Somers Point, New Jersey, coal-laden from Baltimore for Boston, which stranded about five miles north of Ocean City at 6 a.m. on January 10, 1883 in a snowstorm. Smith and five of his men spent nine hours on the bowsprit and were taken off by breeches buoy that afternoon.
