Edward J. Monahan
U.S. War Department engineer in charge of the Ocean City inlet works · active 1934-1936
The resident engineer on the Ocean City inlet. 'Edward J. Monahan, who has been an engineer of the U. S. War Department in charge of Inlet work at Ocean City for the past two years, has been transferred to Lancaster, Pa., for a few weeks to engage in flood relief construction work,' the Democratic Messenger reported on 9 April 1936, which places him on the job from about April 1934 - that is, from the beginning of the jetty contract. His office stood near the inlet and was swept away in the hurricane of 18 September 1936, along with the neighbouring house of C. J. Carey of Philadelphia. A colleague, the civil engineer Bertram Cropper, son of Harry J. Cropper of Ocean City, was employed on the inlet project until his transfer to the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal in July 1936.
