Ocean City man who in 1917 sat on the three-member local exemption board for Worcester County with Oliver D. Collins of Snow Hill and Dr. R. Lee Hall of Pocomoke City — the board that examined the county's drafted men in the Snow Hill Court House from 7 August, thirty a day, and heard claims of exemption on account of dependents. He is almost certainly the E. B. Showell Myres of Ocean City recorded in 1913 as president of the Bellrose Fishing Company, out of whose pounds a seventeen-pound trout was taken that May. Making a fish-company president the town's draft examiner put the local labour supply and the local conscription machinery in the same hands.

The first open golf tournament at Ocean City is decided on the thirty-sixth hole before a gallery of over a hundred.
The Ocean City Golf and Country Club's first open tournament ran 1-3 August 1901. In the qualifying round Thomas Slidell of New York - a Knickerbocker Club man entered from the Ocean City club - went round in 86, Dwight Mallory of the Baltimore Country Club in 88 and James P. McShane, also of Baltimore, in 90. In the semi-finals McShane beat Victor Wilson of the Ocean City club 2 up and 1 to play and was then beaten by Slidell 1 up, while Mallory beat John F. Waggaman of the Columbia Golf Club 7 up and 6 to play. The final, thirty-six holes at match play on Saturday 3 August, went to Slidell: three up after the morning eighteen, all square at the thirty-fifth, and the championship won at the thirty-sixth, with Mallory taking the runner-up trophy. H. E. Waggaman of Chevy Chase won the consolation cup from E. B. Showell Myers of Torresdale, Pennsylvania, 5 up and 3 to play. "A gallery of over a hundred" watched. Mixed foursomes followed the next week, twelve couples, the cup won by Mr. John Reynolds and Mrs. Barreda Turner of Baltimore.

Worcester County's draft quota is 152; 304 men are summoned, thirty a day, and an Ocean City man sits on the exemption board.
After the registration of 5 June 1917 and the July drawing, the Democratic Messenger of 28 July named the local exemption board for Worcester County: "Messrs. Oliver D. Collins, of Snow Hill, and E. D. Showell Myers, of Ocean City, and Dr. R. Lee Hall, of Pocomoke City." Occupational exemptions went to a district board sitting at Cambridge. The paper of 4 August set out the arithmetic: "The number of persons that will be summoned for physical examination is double the number of Worcester County's quota. The quota being 152, double that number, or 304 persons will be summoned." Examinations began in the Court House at Snow Hill on Tuesday 7 August, thirty men a day, the physicals made by Dr. Hall, Dr. John I. Riley and Dr. A. E. Landers. Of the first ninety examined, forty were accepted, forty-one rejected and nine failed to appear. The published lists carry Ocean City men through the autumn — among them Harry Leslie Wyatt, Irving Mumford, Samuel Joseph Monkhouse, Joshua Thomas Bowden, John Henry Elliott, Charles Lee Quillin, Laurence Edward Adkins, Frank W. Truitt, Emerson Purnell, Harry S. Bunting, Robert Francis Quillen, Thomas H. Purnell, Herman Adkins, Daniel Jefferson Birch, Charles S. Calhoun Jr., Lyle Richard Cropper, Guy Phillip Ralph Dennis, William F. Manuel, Rollie Collins Cropper and Granville Trimper. The paper also warned that the election supervisors' books were being compared against the draft registration and that "arrests are sure to follow" for men aged 21 to 30 who had not registered.
