Charles Quartley

Baltimore commercial photographer, born November 1836, died December 1904, buried at Loudon Park Cemetery. He appears in the R. L. Polk Baltimore directories from 1889, first as a partner in the photographic firm Russell & Co. of 5 N. Charles Street and then on his own account at 11 East Baltimore Street, where he was still listed in 1904. He is the 'Charles Quartly' the campaign has been hunting since 1895, when he photographed beach scenes at Ocean City for a book the Sinepuxent Beach Company intended to publish, including the life-saving crew at drill, and was still working on the beach in 1896. The archival spelling is QUARTLEY, which is why every previous search failed. He is not the Baltimore marine painter Arthur Quartley, who died in 1886; whether the two were brothers is unproved, though the surname sits in two Baltimore art trades at once and they were born three years apart in the same city.
