C. H. Stokes

An attache of the United States Capitol who summered at Ocean City in 1900, served as secretary to the Atlantic Hotel's head waiter, was elected treasurer of the Ocean City Lyceum, belonged to the Cordova Social Club and the Imperial Yachting Club, leased a yacht for the balance of the season, and was one of the two named assistant correspondents of The Colored American at Ocean City. The seven weekly Ocean City columns of 1900 are substantially his and Bernard Hartgrove's work, which makes him the earliest identifiable Black chronicler of the town.
