"Antonie"
seaman, schooner Sallie W. Kay · d. 1883
A German sailor aboard the schooner Sallie W. Kay, known to his shipmates only as "Antonie." On the morning of January 10, 1883, after three hours clinging to the bowsprit of the stranded schooner five miles north of Ocean City, he jumped and tried to swim ashore against wind and tide to fetch help. He was numbed by the water and lost. His body came ashore two days later on North Beach, a quarter mile north of James Birch's. His surname was never recorded. He is the only documented death at Ocean City in 1883.
