The Army bureau that ran the national weather service and the coastal telegraph line before the civilian Weather Bureau was created in 1891. Its Ocean City, Md. station — established (or reopened) in 1882 with Private Frederick C. Pratz in charge — was the town's first federal post outside the Life-Saving Station. In February 1885 the station's dispatch to the Chief Signal Officer about the burning schooner F. J. Collins was the wire copy that carried Ocean City's name into newspapers from New York to Sacramento within two days.
