Service Men's Center at Ocean City

civic

A service men's centre operating at Ocean City during the Second World War, known from a single notice: the 111th Infantry dance band played the Pier Ballroom on a Friday night in February 1943 for its benefit. Nothing else about it has been recovered — not its address, its sponsor, who ran it, when it opened or when it closed. It is recorded because a resort town running a centre for servicemen in the year its own season had collapsed is the kind of institution that leaves almost no trace and matters to the war-years argument.
