Custodian of Assateague Island National Seashore, and the federal body that told Ocean City its jetties were eating the island next door. It reported 573,000 visitors to the seashore by the end of its first summer in 1967. In a joint session with the Corps of Engineers in 1978 its regional officer, with an engineer brought specially from Philadelphia, put the loss of northern Assateague on the record as "the recession of the island as a result of the jetty system" — an objection the council waited out, and which the town was still contradicting in 1984 with "we have had people looking at our jetties; they work." The reversal is complete by 2022, when the town found itself arguing the environmental case against a project offshore. It also supplies the dating of the Assateague life-saving stations to a service life beginning in 1875.
