Fourth Battalion, Maryland State Guard
government
The Lower Shore battalion of the Maryland State Guard — the home-defence force raised to replace the National Guard after it was federalised. On Saturday 3 July 1943 the battalion and the Minute Men mobilised more than 900 men across Wicomico, Somerset, Worcester and Dorchester counties in a statewide test of defences, in which the scenario had Ocean City shelled from the sea and its holiday visitors evacuated up the highway.
