Du Pont chemists turned a boardwalk amusement stand called the Sugar Bowl into a laboratory for extracting bromine from sea water.

Midland Journal, 16 January 1925: "One of the popular amusement stands at Ocean City, Md., during the summer months known as the 'Sugar Bowl,' is being fitted out as an experimental laboratory under the direction of chemists from the Wilmington headquarters of the Du Pont firm. Experiments will be made in extracting bromine from water."

In the winter of 1925 the most advanced industrial chemistry in America was being done in a closed candy stand on the Ocean City boardwalk — bromine out of sea water, for the leaded petrol that was about to remake the automobile, on a beach whose whole economy was automobiles.
