Diakonia
civic · founded 1972
A crisis ministry serving Worcester County, founded in 1972, which the town's own 2007 proclamation describes as providing emergency food, emergency shelter and transitional housing "24 hours a day, 365 days a year". It is one of the very few organisations in this record whose work is with the poor rather than with property, and it reaches the council mostly through other people's reports: named in the 1999 All-America City application alongside the Children's House by the Sea and the Coastal Bays programme, and again in October 2019 as a member of the Homeless Outreach Team formed with the Ocean City Police Department, the Worcester County Health Department and Social Services — the team that had identified forty homeless people in the town, twenty-four of them still unhoused.
