Organised at a meeting at the Atlantic Hotel, Ocean City, Md., in the summer of 1927, along lines advocated by the National Real Estate Board so as to make affiliation with that body possible — chiefly for the right to use the protected word "Realtor". Every member had to agree to accept and abide by the national association's code of ethics. Its founding at Ocean City is a measure of how far the shore land boom had come since the concrete road reached the beach.

The peninsula's real-estate men organise at the Atlantic Hotel so they can legally call themselves Realtors.
"Along lines advocated by the National Real Estate Board, and thereby making possible affiliation with that organization, the Del-Mar-Va Eastern Shore Real Estate Board was officially organized at a recent meeting at the Atlantic Hotel, Ocean City, Md. Among the numerous advantages which the Peninsula Board would enjoy as members of the National Association is the right granted to use the word 'Realtor', which is rigidly protected and implies that the user thereof is operating in accordance with the ethics and rules and regulations of the National Board. The local Board carries as one of its stipulations the requirement that each member agrees to accept and abide by the ethics of the National Association."
In 1925 people bought Ocean City ground because of the road. By August 1927 the men selling it had organised themselves, adopted a national code of ethics, and met to do it in the hotel that had burned down twenty months earlier. The land boom had acquired a professional body before the town had a fire engine worth the name.
