A deliberately scarce, clearly-labeled slate of ad inventory that keeps the guide independent and free — one business per category, taken for a month or a season at a fixed rate, or won for a single day by sealed-bid silent auction.
The inventory
There are exactly two kinds of slot, and never more of either on a given day:
- 1 Premier slot — the crown jewel. It runs on the homepage, and it additionally fills every category slot that went unclaimed that day, at no extra charge. Your reach grows automatically when category demand is soft.
- 1 slot per category — exactly one advertiser owns each of these categories at a time, whether they took the season or won the night:Sit-down diningTakeout & grab-and-goBreakfastNightlifeMini golfActivitiesFishingShoppingFenwick IslandWest OC / Berlin
Scarcity is the product: a crab house can own the entire dining category for a summer Saturday — no one else in that category shows up on that page that day.
Own a category for the season
Most businesses here do not want to bid every night. Take a category for a month or for the whole season instead, and it is yours for the run: your placement is the one that shows in that category on every surface that has one, and the nightly auction for it does not open.
- One sponsor per category, for the whole range. Not one per night — the same exclusivity, held continuously, with nothing to re-win.
- Priced by the span you buy, day by day, so a month covering White Marlin Open costs more than the same month without it and a season package prices the quiet shoulder honestly instead of averaging it in.
- From $100 a month. Peak months and the Premier position cost more; nothing is sold below that floor.
- It ends when it ends. A sponsorship stops on its last day and the category returns to the nightly auction. There is no auto-renewal and no twelve-month lock.
Pick a category and a span for the live price. It is computed from the same rate card that produces every quote we send, so nothing here is a range or an “up to”.
How the auction works
- Sealed bids. No one — including us, until close — can see what anyone else has bid.
- Bids close 9:00 PM ET the evening before the placement runs.Saturday's slots close Friday at 9pm.
- Highest valid bid wins. Ties break by earliest submission timestamp.
- Reserve prices are published per category and date, and run higher on peak dates — July Saturdays, Fest weekends, White Marlin Open week.
- Unsold category slotsautomatically show that day's Premier winner's creative at no additional charge, or a house “Advertise here” card if no one bought Premier either.
The editorial firewall
Ads never affect rankings, reviews, or editorial stances — placement buys visibility only.
The go-kart verdict stays the go-kart verdict. Buying a slot does not change what we say about your business, where you appear in a “best of” list, whether you're listed at all, or anything a reviewer writes. This is a contractual term of every sale, not just a policy — buyers cannot claim any expectation otherwise.
Ad-free zones
Some surfaces carry no ad inventory at all — it is not offered and cannot be purchased, at any price:
- The accessibility layer
- Beach safety content (§3.20 — flags, rip currents, the lost-child procedure)
- History & heritage tours (the Boardwalk History Walk, Storms & Rescues, Haunted OC)
Creative standards
- One image, one link, and copy of 140 characters or fewer.
- Truthful, family-appropriate, and compliant with applicable advertising law.
- Alcohol creative:21+ venues only, never served on kids-facing surfaces, and subject to Maryland's alcoholic-beverage advertising rules.
- No political advertising.
- Every placement carries a visible “Sponsored” label — styled distinctly from editorial content, never disguised as it.
- All creative passes moderation before it runs; a rejection means a full refund of that slot.
Buying a slot buys a labeled placement. It does not buy coverage, and it does not buy silence.
An advertiser's purchase never causes an item in our news section to be written, killed, softened, or ordered differently. Advertising and editorial do not talk to each other, and the only direction the information flows is this one: an ad category is picked from what an item is about, never the other way round.
Some items carry no advertising at all, whoever wants to buy it. Nothing filed under history or heritage, nothing about safety or an emergency, and nothing about a business closing, being cited, or otherwise having a bad day — regardless of whose ad it is or whose business it is. A restaurant ad beside “Blue Fish Grill closes after 22 years” is grotesque whether or not the advertiser competes, and it is worse if they do not, because then we have monetized someone's closing and dragged a bystander into it.
How to bid — today, by email
The automated bidding platform is launching later. Right now, the silent auction runs by email: tell us the category and date(s) you want, and your sealed bid. We run the close by hand at 9:00 PM ET the evening before, exactly as described above, and confirm the result by email the same night.
